Orthopedic Basic Medical Science (Anatomy & Phy & Nutrition/Ergonomic) (PBON 5112)
This subject covers essential concepts in Anatomy and Physiology relevant to orthopaedic care, including the musculoskeletal, nervous, circulatory systems, and joints. It also introduces Applied Nutrition, focusing on nutrients, dietary requirements, and therapeutic diets for orthopaedic patients. Key principles of infection control and ergonomics are also included to promote safe and effective nursing practice.
Behavioural Science (Ethics & Law Nursing/Counselling) (PBON 5122)
This subject explores the roles of orthopaedic nurses within clinical practice settings, supported by foundational knowledge in psychology and sociology. It also covers key aspects of guidance and counselling, ethical and legal considerations in orthopaedic care, and introduces the principles of evidence-based practice to support informed clinical decision-making.
Orthopaedic Nursing 1 (Musculoskeletal Function/Trauma) (PBON 5134)
This subject introduces the fundamental concepts of orthopaedic nursing, focusing on the assessment and care of patients with altered musculoskeletal functions. Students will learn to manage patients undergoing diagnostic procedures, as well as those receiving orthopaedic therapies and modalities. Emphasis is placed on the general principles of care for patients with common conditions such as fractures of the upper and lower limbs.
Orthopaedic Nursing 2 (Musculoskeletal Disorder/Congenital) (PBON 5144)
This subject covers the pathophysiology of various orthopaedic disorders, including congenital, metabolic, degenerative, neoplastic, and autoimmune joint diseases. Students will explore conditions such as osteomalacia, rickets, osteoporosis, Paget’s disease, arthritis, bone tumours, and paediatric congenital disorders like developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and limb deformities. It also addresses geriatric orthopaedic care, emphasising rehabilitation principles, home physical therapy, and the nurse’s role in health education and home care.
Orthopaedic Nursing 3 (Spinal Disorder/Head Injury) (PBON 5152)
This subject focuses on orthopaedic complications and the specialised nursing care required for conditions such as compartment syndrome, osteomyelitis, bone tuberculosis, and spinal or head injuries. It covers the management of patients with paraplegia, hemiplegia, and quadriplegia, as well as spinal deformities including scoliosis, kyphosis, and lordosis. Students will also learn about intervertebral disc prolapse, low back disorders, and the principles of operative orthopaedic nursing care, including joint replacement, spine surgery, amputation, and corrective procedures for deformities.
Clinical Practice (PBON 5166)
This subject provides hands-on clinical practice in orthopaedic nursing, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in real healthcare settings under supervision. It also includes educational visits to enhance learning through exposure to specialised orthopaedic services and facilities.
