Programme Overview

Diploma in Pharmacy is offered at two of our campuses: KPJUC in Nilai and KPJIC in Penang. This pharmacy programme aims to produce qualified Pharmacy Assistants (PA) equipped with relevant knowledge and skills as well as practical experience. Throughout the 3 years of study, students will undergo several modules, categorised as Basic Science Subjects (Integrated Mathematics & Statistics, Human Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, etc.), Pharmacy Core Subjects (Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Hospital Pharmacy, etc.) and Compulsory Subjects such as English for Professional Communication and Mata Pelajaran Umum (MPU).

Students will undergo practical training at any 28 KPJ Specialist Hospitals in semester 3 and semester 6 to gain much-needed, hands-on, real-life clinical and pharmacy practice experience. Upon completion of the study, students shall be ready to work in pharmacy departments of public and private hospitals or clinics, retail pharmacy outlets and manufacturing companies. For those who are more ambitious and qualified may proceed with our Bachelor of Pharmacy to become a Licensed Pharmacists or Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science. As graduates of KPJUC and KPJIC you will have more advantage to be employed by KPJ Healthcare Group of Specialist Hospitals all over Malaysia.

Pharmacy Practice/ Clinical: Pharmacy assistant in hospitals, clinics, retail pharmacy and community health centres

Financing your Study

For 2023, KPJ offers a lot of opportunities for Scholarship in the form of Biasiswa by Merit that reflects our commitment in grooming future professionals and leaders in the healthcare sector. With the combination of PTPTN and our Scholarship, many students may not need to pay or pay very little tuition. Hostel accommodation for the whole duration of 3 years of your study which is readily included in the tuition and fee. Please refer the following Table for an indication of how much you will actually need to pay or will receive for your study. This calculation is based on the condition that you, like almost all our present students, are approved and receive PTPTN to pay for your tuition and fee. We would help you to apply for PTPTN during your orientation week.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Malaysian students:

  • Pass SPM/SPMV/ O-level/equivalent
  • Credit in 3 subjects (1 of the subject must be Science or Mathematic)

  • Grade B in 3 subjects (1 of the subject must be Science or Mathematic)
International Students:
Similar as Malaysian candidate, AND must possess IELTS ≥ 5.5 or TOEFL ≥ 550 or equivalent.

PROGRAMME DETAILS

This module is designed to provide the student the knowledge and skills which will enable students to draw and interpret graphs of linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, etc. Ultimately they will be able to solve related equations and inequalities, as well as simple real life problems related to their career in pharmacy.

This course designed for students with majors/minors in the sciences or related disciplines. This course will provide the student with an in-depth study of the anatomy and physiology (structure and function) of the human body. Both normal and pathological conditions are emphasized.

This module introduces the basic knowledge of Pharmaceutics which covers elements of pharmaceutics such as principles of pharmaceutics, use of drug information resources, components of prescription, routes of administration and pharmaceutical dosage forms, pharmaceutical packaging and types of containers, storage, labelling requirements and calculations. At the end of the module, the students will understand the roles and responsibility of pharmacy assistant and will be able to utilise this knowledge in the upcoming modules.

This course is designed to equip students with foundation skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will be exposed to the strategies in effective listening and speaking; parts of speech, simple tenses, and the structure of 5-paragraph essay focusing on cause-effect genre.

These units will enable students to understand their basic roles in the pharmaceutical and healthcare field. Basically, it is to introduce the organization system and the national pharmaceutical care and this module also introduces the career prospects in the field of pharmaceutical and healthcare.

This module is designed to enable the student to study the basic principles of chemistry and to use the knowledge to relate the importance of chemistry in chemical analysis; and to various body processes which includes chemical reactions and interactions in the body.

Kursus ini membincangkan Sejarah dan Politik, Perlembagaan Malaysia, Sistem dan Struktur Pentadbiran Negara, Kemasyarakatan dan Perpaduan dan Pembangunan Negara dan Agama Kepercayaan. Kursus ini adalah bertujuan untuk melahirkan graduan yang mempunyai identiti kebangsaan dan semangat patriotisme yang unggul. Pengajaran dan pembelajaran akan dilaksanakan dalam bentuk kuliah, tugasan, peperiksaan dan pengalaman pembelajaran.

This module covers pharmaceutical ingredients, excipients, compounding of standard solution, suspensions and liquid emulsions as well as compounding of extemporaneous and reconstitution products. It utilises pharmaceutical calculation method in the preparation of pharmaceutical products.

This course is designed to equip students with the basics of English language skills and develop communicative competence in spoken and written English, particularly in preparation for tertiary study and employment. Students will learn about verbal communication focusing on Standard People’s Practice. Additionally, students would be able to inculcate values and professionalism and apply problem solving skills in everyday scenarios.

This module provides student’s knowledge of microorganism and the activity associated with illnesses, body’s defence and how to control the spread of infection. This module also introduces students the basics of microbiology, the spread, control as well as cures for different types of infections.

This module is designed to provide the student the knowledge and skills which will enable students to utilise the information pertaining to drugs in the treatment and management of diseases of the gastrointestinal system and respiratory system.

This course provides students with basic knowledge about the process of decision-making skills and behaviours wisely and efficiently. This includes giving students an understanding of some decision-making approach based on decision-making models selected. Aspects that influence decision-making as a value, needs and goals as well as an element of uncertainty is also discussed. In addition, religion and religious factors, experience, environment, cognitive, psychological, ethical and individual personalities also taken into account in decision making.

This subject equips pharmacy assistants with the knowledge and skill on correct dispensing techniques, select information on drug dosage for the correct use of medication to enhance patient management. It provides the opportunity to simulate the practice in hospital pharmacy setting. The module also includes medication safety issues in hospital practice, therefore students are exposed to problem solving and decision making skills to resolve patient concerns, questions, and complaints hence improving the overall services.

This module will provide exposure and experience to hospital inpatient pharmacy practice. The task will require them to perform the processes at inpatient pharmacy service including screening of prescription, preparation and filling medication, selection of appropriate container, labelling and counter checking the complete prescription. This module also helps them to understand and differentiate the various processes such as medication chart, unit of dose vs. unit of use, return of medication, to take away (TTA) medication, floor stock procedures, DDA / psychotropic supply, extemporaneous  / compounding preparation, cold chain supply, medication reconciliation, patient education / counselling and checking stock level.

The students will be sent to selected hospital pharmacies institutions that will emphasize the outpatient dispensing process in pharmacy practice. They will be able to examine hospital pharmacy practice, including the role of pharmacy assistant within the health care system, outpatient dispensing process, medication safety, and the routine tasks of the pharmacy technician.

This module is designed to provide the student the knowledge and skills which will enable students to utilise the information pertaining to drugs in the treatment and management of the endocrine, cardio renal, nutrition and blood, ophthalmic and auditory systems.

This module is designed to provide pharmacy students a comprehensive understanding of pharmacy management skills for pharmacy practice. Particular focus is given to customer services, work force management and workplace issues. The students will also be exposed to simulated practical experiences through case studies and discussions about managerial decision making in the daily routine tasks of the pharmacy profession.

This course is developed to equip students with reading, writing, and speaking skills in different context for future higher level courses. Students will also learn about writing compare contrast essay and opinion essay. Grammar and vocabulary are also included in this course in order to help students in their writing and speaking.

Kursus ini mendedahkan kepada pelajar tentang konsep asas dalam Islam yang merupakan agama rasmi di Malaysia. Topik dalam kursus ini juga menghubungkaitkan kepentingan dan pengaruh Islam kepada masyarakat dalam kehidupan seharian. Selain itu juga, pelajar mampu menerapkan nilai dan penghayatan beragama di dalam diri dan melatih diri dalam menyelesaikan masalah dan isu semasa dunia Islam.

This module covers pharmaceutical ingredients, excipients, compounding of dermatological preparations, suppository and pessary, powders and granules, oral solid dosage form, ophthalmic and parenteral preparations. It utilises pharmaceutical calculation method in the preparation of pharmaceutical products. This module also provides the exposure on sterilization methods for products such as ophthalmic and parenteral.

This module embraces the major concepts in alternative medicine, in first describing its origin, methods and various therapeutic uses. It offers the students an understanding of each type and its methods of practices namely ; naturopathy , Traditional Malay Medicine , Traditional Chinese Medicine , acupuncture , reflexology , ayurvedic , chiropractic ,homeopathy and aromatherapy.

Topics covered in lectures include cell injury and causes, pathogenesis of cell injury, atrophy and hypertrophy, Inflammation, mediators and repair, Pathophysiology of various infectious and non-infectious diseases as well as common disorders to human body.

This module will provide student with the skills and knowledge to work at entry level in a retail / community pharmacy. Typical functions within the retail / community pharmacy industry at this level include serving and interacting with customers, merchandising products and controlling stock, understanding the product range and differentiating the roles and responsibilities of pharmacy assistants and pharmacists, communicating with customers to identify needs and provide appropriate product advice and / or referral.

This course discusses the concept of community engagement projects, preparation of proposal papers and effective project features. The purpose of the course is to provide understanding and appreciation in implementing community engagement projects. Teaching and learning will be conducted in the form of interactive lectures, group discussions, experiential learning through group activities and volunteerism. At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to practice values and ethics, leadership and teamwork as well as social responsibilities.

This module will provide various methods of analysis for the quality control of drugs. Its rational approaches on the physical or chemical structure and origin of products through pharmaceuticals tests. It deals with the theory and practical application of various methods used to analyze biological and chemical samples, including hands-on practice with equipment such as spectroscopic and chromatographic instruments and methods. . It also emphasizes on the use of instrumentation to analyze levels of metabolism and mechanism of drug by linking the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics principles in Pharmacology

This module gives the student a chance to practice the skills received in the classroom using aseptic techniques in the laboratory and on attachment in an aseptic unit of a hospital pharmacy environment. This module also introduces the concept and principles of the drug distribution system which is fundamental to the pharmacy assistant’s role.

This module is designed to provide the student the knowledge and skills which will enable students to utilise the information pertaining to drugs in the treatment and management of disorders of the nervous system, skin disorders, infectious diseases, neoplastic diseases and musculoskeletal disorders.

This module provides students with the basic information off a research review the literature and refine the study by developing the statistical background and establishing parameters for the study.

This module will provide student with the skills and knowledge to work at entry level in a retail / community pharmacy. Typical functions within the retail / community pharmacy industry at this level include serving and interacting with customers, merchandising products and controlling stock, understanding the product range and differentiating the roles and responsibilities of pharmacy assistants and pharmacists, communicating with customers to identify needs and provide appropriate product advice and / or referral.

This course will enable the students to comprehend the role of allied health professionals in ensuring safety at workplace. It covers the legislation aspect, various occupational hazards, and classification of risk, occupational related injuries, disorders and hierarchy of hazards control

The students will be sent to selected hospital pharmacies and institutions that will emphasize sterile compounding on Cytotoxic Drug Reconstitution (CDR). The integration of theories in Pharmaceutics and Basic Clinical Pharmacy develop clinical reasoning skills in a pharmacy setting where emphasis is on aseptic skills and sterile compounding on Cytotoxic Drugs.

The students will be sent to selected hospital pharmacies and institutions that will emphasize on the inventory control and cold chain management. Students will be required to profile common drugs utilize at inpatient / outpatient department.
