Programme Overview

The Post Basic Certificate in Emergency Nursing (PBEN) is a 6 month homegrown programme offered by School of Nursing, KPJ Healthcare University, Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. It obtained its approval from the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (MOHE) on October 2023 and the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA). The structure of the curriculum is guided by the Standard and Guidelines of the Nursing Board Malaysia. The Post Basic Certificate in Emergency Nursing (PBEN) is 20 credits programme and for clinical practice, it will be done at various accredited KPJ hospitals and ministry of health hospital.

 

Career Opportunity

This course is designed primarily to prepare Registered Nurse in the Emergency Room with required knowledge, skills, and characteristics to function in a safety-conscious and effective manner in emergency setting. It is also aimed to prepare the emergency room nurses to evaluate and monitor patients and to manage their care in the emergency department including providing first aid, advanced clinical care, and lifesaving medications.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Malaysian students:

  • Minimum entry requirement for Post Basic Certificate in Emergency Nursing:
    1. Possess Diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution by MNB.
    2. Registered with the MNB
    3. Possess current Annual Practicing Certificate (APC) for nurses from MNB.
    4. Minimum two (2) years clinical working experience.
  • Health Status

    1. All candidates MUST be certified medically fit by a registered medical practitioner with ONE MONTH from commencement of the nursing programme.
    2. A person with any of the following shall be disqualified from entry into nursing program. Serious physical or mental illness, and / or Serious communicable disease
    3. Candidate MUST not have any physical disabilities or impaired senses that hinder nursing dexterity.

PROGRAMME DETAILS

This course will prepare students to be equipped with a strong foundation in pathophysiology of different human diseases and injuries. The course will assist students in applying the pathophysiology concept of diseases and injuries in the management of different pathological conditions in emergency settings.

This course is an introduction of care provision specifically in medical and surgical emergencies. The clinical foundation on the medical and surgical emergencies and prioritization of initial management of care will be deliberated in depth. The students will be able to engage in detailed discussion, pertaining to the philosophy of emergency, the clinical emergency, and the immediate nursing care of patients

This course applies to students on how to understand the basic principles of emergency medical services for patients and how to rapidly assess, resuscitate and stabilize critically ill or injured victims in the scene and during transportation to the emergency department setting. Students also will be able to understand how to evaluate and manage common signs and symptoms in patients presenting to an emergency department and how to manage common illness and injuries that present emergently. Perform an appropriate problem-oriented history and physical examination

It is designed to test clinical skill performance and competence in skills such as communication, clinical examination, medical procedures prescription, exercise prescription, joint mobilization/manipulation techniques, radiographic positioning, radiographic image evaluation, and interpretation of results.

This course is to equip students with a concrete comprehension of clinical emergency management principles, about managing trauma, from minor injury to humanitarian emergencies, including injuries in women, children, and the elderly, with the principal goal of improving quality of care and patient safety. Formulate a differential diagnosis, with appropriate prioritization, recognizing patients with possible life-threatening conditions such as shock, respiratory failure, sepsis, and anaphylaxis.

This course is mainly to increase the student’s knowledge and skill by participating in the evaluation, surgical intervention, ward care, and clinic follow-up of the multiple injured trauma patient.

This course is to introduce the student to the relevant leadership and management skills in emergency nursing. The course will cover topics to develop students as clinical leaders and effective team members in clinical practice towards the efficiency and effective care to patients, families, and communities in emergency settings.
